All networked hosts have the ability to service network connections from other hosts in order to satisfy various kinds of requests: anything from a web page to an e-mail transfer. These services are distinguished by the port number that they respond to; web service (HTTP) is on port 80, FTP is on port 21, SMTP (for e-mail) is on port 25, and so on. Rather than hard-code a port number into applications that listen for network connections, we can instead configure a service, assign it to a port number, and then have the application listen for connections on the service port number. The object-oriented override module for service queries is Net::servent, and we saw examples of using it in both the object-oriented style and with imported variables earlier. Unlike the host and network modules, Net::servent does override getservent, so we can iterate through services without having to collect names or port numbers into a list first and then run through the result with getservbyname or getservbyport. In addition, Net::servent defines getserv as a convenience subroutine that maps a passed argument onto either getservbyproto or getservbyname depending on whether the passed argument looks numeric or not.
